Walmart Expands Drone Delivery Service to Reach More US Households

Walmart is strategically expanding its drone delivery service in an effort to compete with rivals like Amazon. The company is expanding its service to 1.8 million additional households in North Texas, reaching 75% of households across the Dallas and Fort Worth area. This move will impact stores in over 30 towns and municipalities in the region. Walmart claims to be the first retailer to offer drone delivery to such a large number of households in a single market, solidifying its position as having the “largest drone delivery footprint of any U.S. retailer.”

The drones, powered by Wing and Zipline, enable households within the delivery zones to receive items within just 30 minutes. These drone delivery providers have been approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to fly without a dedicated observer constantly monitoring the drone. This approval has allowed Walmart to expand its reach and increase the number of households it can serve. Since 2021, Walmart has been working with Zipline to deliver items in Pea Ridge, Arkansas, while Wing partnered with the company last August to offer service in two locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, reaching 60,000 households.

With nearly 4,700 Walmart stores within a 10-mile radius of 90% of the U.S. population, the company sees itself as uniquely positioned to scale its drone delivery service. Amazon, its main competitor, has also been rapidly expanding its own drone program, with Prime Air drone deliveries now available in three U.S. cities. Additionally, Amazon plans to introduce drone delivery in Italy and the U.K. later this year. Both Walmart and Amazon are leveraging drone technology to enhance their delivery capabilities and provide faster and more convenient service to customers.
