Quantum Sweden Launches Innovation Platform for Quantum Technology

PRESS RELEASE — In a bid to translate quantum research into innovation and strengthen competitiveness, Quantum Sweden, an innovation platform, has been launched at Chalmers Industrial-technology. The platform, with funding support from Vinnova, aims to bring together researchers, industry players, and startups to develop quantum technology in areas such as health, energy, finance, and defense.

Quantum technology is still in its early stages but is rapidly advancing and is expected to become a key technology in various fields in the future. Sweden already boasts successful research in quantum technology through initiatives like the Wallenberg-funded WACQT. However, there has been a lack of coordination and collaboration among these initiatives.

Inspired by AI Sweden, a center for applied AI, Vinnova initiated a call for proposals for a national innovation platform for quantum technology. The Quantum Sweden Innovation Platform (QSIP) was granted funding for its establishment phase. The platform is led by the foundation Chalmers industriteknik and includes partners such as WACQT-IP, Rise, GU Ventures, KTH, Lund University, Linköping University, Chalmers Technical university college, Ericsson, Scalinq, and Con-science.

The goal of Quantum Sweden is to foster innovation and commercialization in quantum technology by supporting organizations and researchers in the process. However, QSIP will not provide financial support or funding to actors. The granted funding of SEK 3 million will cover the platform’s implementation phase for the first year, with an equal contribution from the project itself.

Quantum technology is based on quantum mechanics and allows control and manipulation of individual quantum systems. It is divided into four sub-areas: quantum computers, quantum simulation, quantum communication, and quantum sensors. These technologies have the potential to revolutionize various industries, from solving optimization problems to developing new drugs and enabling more accurate measurements.

By establishing Quantum Sweden, Sweden aims to stay competitive in the global quantum technology race and attract talent to the country. The platform will work in collaboration with existing quantum initiatives and contribute to Sweden’s quantum agenda. With the support of Vinnova and its partners, Quantum Sweden aims to drive innovation and ensure Sweden’s position as a leader in quantum technology.
