Ukraine has unveiled a new online service aimed at helping Russians locate their missing soldier relatives who may have been killed or are being held as prisoners of war in Ukraine. This initiative is expected to increase pressure on Moscow, as more and more Russians seek information about the fate of their loved ones who went missing during the country’s invasion of Ukraine.
The online service, named “I Want to Find” in Russian, will utilize the popular Telegram app, which is widely used in both Russia and Ukraine. By using this chatbot, Russian citizens will be able to access objective information about their relatives that has been allegedly withheld by the Russian government.
Andriy Yusov, spokesperson for Ukraine’s GUR military intelligence agency, highlighted the importance of this project, stating that Russians can now officially apply to obtain accurate information about their missing relatives. Ukraine and Russia have engaged in prisoner exchanges throughout the war, with the most recent one resulting in the release of 230 Ukrainian captives in exchange for 248 Russian troops.
To gather information about missing soldiers, the project will collaborate with individuals using the chatbot and cross-check the provided data against Ukrainian databases containing information on captured, killed, and missing Russian soldiers. The initiative was presented by Irina Krynina, who introduced herself as a Russian citizen and co-founder of a civic movement dedicated to locating and repatriating Russian soldiers.
Once the appropriate information is obtained, users will have the opportunity to sign up for a consultation and, if necessary, a video call to verify the identity of their missing relatives. This will enable Russians to approach their authorities with concrete evidence and demand an exchange.
