Development of Co-MLOps Project Revolutionizes Autonomous Driving Technology

TIER IV, a leading company in open-source autonomous driving technology, has recently launched the Co-MLOps (Cooperative Machine Learning Operations) Project. This groundbreaking initiative aims to revolutionize the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for autonomous driving. The Co-MLOps Platform, developed under this project, will facilitate the global sharing of managed sensor data, including camera images and LiDAR point clouds, from various regions. Additionally, the platform will provide MLOps functions and Edge AI reference models, empowering partner companies to enhance their proprietary AI for autonomous driving.

To showcase the capabilities of this innovative project, TIER IV will be exhibiting edge AI models at CES 2024 in Las Vegas. The models have undergone successful proof of concept tests in eight global regions, evaluating their perception capabilities with video data collected from these areas. These multitask Edge AI models have been optimized to operate at low power consumption levels, making them highly efficient.

Traditionally, the development of AI for autonomous driving has faced challenges due to limited resources and overlapping database construction and development processes. TIER IV is addressing these challenges by leading the development of the Co-MLOps Platform. This platform aims to foster open innovation through collaborative development and overcome scalability issues that have hindered technological advancements in the industry. It will facilitate the sharing of data with privacy and security safeguards, manage the utilization of MLOps functionalities, and provide opportunities for companies to leverage Edge AI reference models.

The Co-MLOps Platform is being developed in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS), leveraging their diverse services such as storage, databases, and computing infrastructure. This cloud-native platform will support updates to recognition models via Over the Air (OTA) and provide cutting-edge technology and a stable infrastructure for the development of autonomous driving AI.

By participating in this project, companies can retain their proprietary technologies, functional safety and development processes, and quality control measures, fostering differentiation. The integration of outputs developed on this platform with the Open AD Kit defined by the Autoware Foundation will accelerate software development for mass production of software-defined vehicles.

TIER IV’s CEO, Shinpei Kato, believes that this project will lead to new collaborations and competitions in AI development, particularly in recognition technologies. He aims to develop world-leading AI technologies for autonomous driving and promote the rollout of safe and reliable AD technologies.

The Co-MLOps project has garnered support from Professor Yutaka Matsuo of the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Engineering, who predicts that the construction of a world model will be further enhanced by utilizing diverse large datasets collected worldwide.

With comprehensive support from AWS and collaborations across the industry, including Arm, the Co-MLOps project is set to solve common challenges in the mobility industry and accelerate innovation in the development and deployment of software-defined vehicles.

Looking ahead, TIER IV plans to optimize sensor architecture, standardize annotation formats, and develop infrastructure for data search and active learning. These advancements will enable more efficient and accurate development of AI for autonomous driving. The integration of data from various sensors, along with generative AI and neural simulators, will simulate complex real-world scenarios and strengthen the training of AI models.

The Co-MLOps Platform is expected to commence full-scale operations in the second half of 2024, greatly improving the development process of AI for autonomous driving and driving technological advancement in the industry. TIER IV continues to collaborate with partner companies and actively seeks new partnerships to further develop and specify functionalities for the Co-MLOps Platform.
