According to Tata Sons chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran, the Tata Group is set to unveil their plans for the development of a semiconductor fabrication plant in Gujarat. This move marks a significant step for Tata, following their recent acquisition of the Wistrom plant near Bengaluru, making them the first Indian company to manufacture iPhones.
The announcement came during the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, a prominent business event in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state. Modi has long advocated for the growth of the chip manufacturing industry, but previous attempts to offer incentives have had mixed results.
Chandrasekaran revealed that the negotiations for the semiconductor plant in Dholera, Gujarat are nearing completion, with plans to commence construction in 2024. This development aligns with Modi’s vision for Gujarat to become a hub of technological innovation and investment.
In addition to the semiconductor plant, the Tata Group also intends to begin the construction of a 20 gigawatts battery storage factory in Gujarat within the next few months. This further demonstrates their commitment to advancing India’s technology infrastructure.
The summit also saw the announcement of other noteworthy investments in Gujarat’s tech sector. South Korean company Simmtech plans to open a chip component plant in the state, while U.S. chipmaker Micron is preparing to establish a semiconductor testing and packaging facility.
