Skoda has announced the integration of an artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT, to its upcoming infotainment system. This move follows the footsteps of sister brand Volkswagen, who showcased the technology at the recent Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
To enhance its voice assistant ‘Laura’, Skoda will leverage ChatGPT in select versions of the all-electric Enyaq and Enyaq Coupe, the next iterations of the Skoda Superb and Kodiaq SUV, and the facelifted Octavia. With the addition of AI capabilities, the voice assistant will be able to provide intuitive answers to diverse questions, enriching conversations with users.
The activation process for the voice assistant remains unchanged, as drivers or passengers can simply say “Okay, Laura” or press a button on the steering wheel. In case the car’s system is unable to fulfill a request, it will seamlessly request assistance from the AI-powered ChatGPT. Importantly, Skoda reassures users that ChatGPT does not access any personal information or vehicle data, and all interactions are promptly deleted after processing to ensure data security.
Klaus Zellmer, the CEO of Skoda, believes that enhancing their voice assistant with artificial intelligence will further enhance the driving experience, making Skoda vehicles an even better everyday companion. Zellmer stated, “Drivers and passengers will have easy, verbal access to worlds of knowledge while on the road.” Emphasizing the company’s commitment to data security, Zellmer added that everything remains hands-free for the driver.
Powering this new functionality is Cerence Chat Pro, provided by Skoda’s technology partner, Cerence Inc. This is the same company that collaborated with Volkswagen to integrate ChatGPT into the facelifted Golf and various other models. Additionally, DS has also adopted generative AI chatbot technology across its entire range, focusing on its ability to offer travel advice and information about nearby places.
