SAG-AFTRA Collaborates with Replica Studios to Promote Ethical Use of AI Voice Technology

SAG-AFTRA, the labor union representing voice actors, has joined forces with Replica Studios, an AI voice technology firm, to establish guidelines for the ethical use of artificial intelligence in creative works. This collaboration aims to ensure fair and equitable employment for voice actors while exploring new revenue opportunities from AI.

The contract between SAG-AFTRA and Replica Studios enables licensed voices to be utilized in various interactive media projects, including video game development, from start to finish. By incorporating AI voice technology in the pre-production and final release of games, studios can streamline the process while maintaining the quality of voice acting performances.

Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA’s national executive director and chief negotiator, emphasized the significance of protecting the rights of voice talent in light of advancements in AI technology. The union recognizes the need to adapt as game studios seek more efficient methods for game creation. By establishing this agreement, SAG-AFTRA aims to ensure that voice actors continue to be valued and compensated fairly in the rapidly evolving landscape of video game development.

The discussion surrounding AI in video games has attracted attention in recent months. Embark Studios, a game development company, revealed its use of AI-generated voices alongside recordings in October 2023. They clarified that the goal is not to eliminate actors entirely but to leverage AI technology to enhance the gaming experience.

In contrast, Genvid, the developer of Silent Hill: Ascension, denied using AI to write dialogue for the game in November. Their CEO, Jacob Navok, assured that all the dialogue in the game was authored by a dedicated team without the assistance of AI-generated text.

Bandai Namco also addressed claims of utilizing AI voice technology in Naruto x Boruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections. A representative from the company stated that the voice-over lines were not AI-generated, emphasizing the involvement of human voice actors in the production.

As the collaboration between SAG-AFTRA and Replica Studios progresses, it holds the potential to shape the future of AI voice technology in the entertainment industry, ensuring that ethical standards are upheld and voice actors are fairly compensated for their work.
