Intel’s latest addition to its regular Core Mobile Series 1 lineup, the Core 7 150U, has recently come under scrutiny for its lackluster graphics performance. While this chip was expected to deliver current-generation capabilities, benchmark results obtained from Geekbench 6 have exposed its limitations.
Compared to AMD’s integrated GPUs, the Iris Xe graphics in the Core 7 150U falls short. Even the lowest-end iGPU, the Radeon 740M, outperforms Intel’s offering. Furthermore, the Radeon 760M and the top-end Radeon 780M in Z1 Extreme, designed for handheld devices, are significantly faster than the 150U’s graphics. Even when pitted against AMD’s old RX Vega 11 iGPU, which was introduced in 2017, the Core 7 150U fails to demonstrate superiority.
One of Intel’s challenges lies in the fact that it has been relying on recycled Tiger Lake’s Xe integrated graphics for an extended period. Meteor Lake, Intel’s next-generation release, is set to introduce new iGPU capabilities that promise to rival AMD’s graphics performance. However, until then, Intel’s recycling strategy has proven ineffective in keeping pace with its competitors.
Fortunately for Intel, there is hope on the horizon. The company is preparing to launch its Core Series 2 Lunar Lake CPUs later this year. These upcoming chips are anticipated to incorporate cutting-edge hardware and second-generation Arc Battlemage integrated graphics, potentially delivering a significant performance boost. While it remains uncertain if Lunar Lake can surpass AMD’s lower-power APUs, there is much promise on paper for Intel’s forthcoming CPUs.
The lackluster graphics performance of the Core 7 150U underscores the pressing need for improvement in Intel’s lineup. As the market becomes increasingly demanding, customers are seeking laptops and devices that can deliver exceptional performance across various applications, including graphics-intensive tasks.
