Intel Expands into the Automotive Sector with AI-Focused Chip

Intel, the chip company, has announced its entry into the automotive sector with the introduction of a new AI-enhanced system-on-a-chip (SoC) for cars. The chip is specifically designed to enhance in-car experiences such as navigation, voice assistants, and vehicle controls. Zeekr, the EV sub-brand of Chinese company Geely, will be the first to integrate Intel’s AI hardware into its vehicles, with the rollout expected later this year.

Intel’s move into the automotive market comes as it aims to secure a position in the growing AI industry, where it competes with Nvidia and AMD. The company believes that AI is more secure when running on a personal computer rather than on the internet, and it plans to introduce a family of SoCs for future software-defined vehicles (SDVs) by the end of 2024.

The automotive industry is facing various challenges as it seeks to incorporate advanced software and technology into cars, including the mass adoption of electric vehicles. Intel’s chips, already present in 50 million cars on the road, power infotainment displays and instrument clusters. The company argues that its AI-enhanced chips will enable vehicles to have improved voice assistants, video conferencing capabilities, and gaming options for rear-seat passengers.

In addition to its AI-focused chip, Intel is also expanding its involvement in the electric vehicle market. It has acquired energy management company Silicon Mobility SAS to help develop EV energy management system-on-chips (SoCs) that will allow for lighter and more manageable batteries without compromising range. Intel is also working with SAE International to establish a new standard for EV power management.

With its entry into the automotive sector, Intel aims to redefine the car as a software-defined vehicle and enhance the overall driving and passenger experience through the integration of AI technology.
