Intel has made a surprising announcement regarding its Application Optimization (APO) software. In a departure from its previous stance, the company has revealed plans to extend APO support to older 12th and 13th Gen Core processors, overturning its decision to exclude them. This is great news for users who may not have the latest gaming CPUs, such as the Core i9 14900K.
APO is designed to enhance performance in supported applications and games by optimizing the communication between the software and the processor. Previously, Intel had stated that APO would only be available for the 14th Gen Core series. However, during its recent CES 2024 press conference, Intel confirmed that it would also bring support to some older K series processors, likely including the Core i9 and Core i7 models.
In addition to expanding processor compatibility, Intel has promised an increase in the number of supported games. Currently, APO supports a meager two titles: Rainbow Six: Siege and Metro: Exodus. However, Intel plans to grow this number to 14 games, although the company has not yet released the full list of supported titles.
While the exact timing of the APO update for older processors remains unknown, the decision to include these models marks a welcome change from Intel’s previous position. With a broader range of supported CPUs and an expanding library of games, Intel hopes to remain competitive against AMD’s Ryzen 7 7800X3D and other X3D processors.
