New AI Accelerator Cards for PCs Unveiled at CES

Lenovo is set to release its ThinkCentre Neo Ultra PC in June, which will feature AI accelerator cards from MemryX and Kinara. These AI cards are expected to provide enhanced AI capabilities to the desktop computer. While major chip manufacturers like AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm have already showcased mobile processors with integrated AI NPUs, only AMD has announced a desktop Ryzen processor with an APU. Intel is planning to launch its Arrow Lake NPU later this year, but until then, PC makers are turning to chip startups to equip their devices with AI capabilities.

The inclusion of AI accelerator cards in the ThinkCentre Neo Ultra PC demonstrates the increasing demand for AI in desktop computers. These cards are more power-efficient and can provide businesses with the AI capabilities they need to drive profits. However, desktop PC makers also recognize that a combination of CPU and GPU can still deliver AI capabilities, especially for those less concerned about power consumption.

MemryX and Kinara are among the AI chip startups that Lenovo is working with. MemryX’s MX3 Edge AI Accelerator, featuring four MX3 chips, offers high-performance AI image recognition capabilities. Kinara, on the other hand, launched its Ara-2 Edge AI processor last fall, which has processing capabilities for generative AI models.

AI is not limited to image recognition but can be used for various applications such as games, avatars, and chatbots. Just as 3D accelerators revolutionized the gaming industry, the introduction of AI accelerator cards is expected to bring advancements in content creation and gaming.

With the release of the ThinkCentre Neo Ultra PC, Lenovo is positioning itself as a leader in the AI PC market. As Intel and other major chip manufacturers continue to develop their AI NPUs, the demand for AI accelerator cards is only expected to grow, leading to more advancements in AI technology for PCs.
