The World Economic Forum (WEF) has raised an alarm on the rise of AI-driven misinformation and its detrimental effects on democracy and global stability. In its recent Global Risks Report, the organization identifies “misinformation and disinformation” as the most significant short-term risk to human progress, emphasizing how the rapid advancements in technology are exacerbating existing problems while creating new ones.
With elections scheduled to take place and close to three billion people expected to vote within the next two years, the WEF warns that the widespread use of false information and the tools to disseminate it could undermine the legitimacy of newly elected governments. The consequence of such distrust can range from violent protests and hate crimes to civil confrontations and even acts of terrorism.
While extreme weather events and societal divisions are also listed as immediate threats, the report highlights that the dangers posed by a range of environmental risks loom larger in the long term. However, for the first time, the report explicitly flags falsified misinformation as the foremost global hazard.
The report authors express concern over the accelerating capabilities of manipulated information, facilitated by the widespread availability of sophisticated technologies and declining trust in institutions. They warn that various actors might exploit synthetic content and generative AI to amplify societal divisions, incite violence, and suppress political dissent, with long-lasting consequences.
The rapid adoption of AI will be a central topic for debate at the upcoming World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, with industry leaders such as OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman and Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella expected to attend.
