Volkswagen to Integrate AI Software in Upcoming Models

German automaker Volkswagen has announced its plans to incorporate integrated artificial intelligence software in its upcoming vehicle models. The software, known as ChatGPT, will be implemented within Volkswagen’s existing voice assistant software, called IPA. This move is aimed at providing a new level of AI capabilities to the infotainment systems of Volkswagen vehicles.

While Volkswagen claims to be the “first volume manufacturer” to utilize ChatGPT in its cars, it is worth noting that Mercedes-Benz had previously launched a beta trial of the technology in some of its models. However, Volkswagen’s implementation involves integrating in-house-designed parts of the system to control vehicle functions like air conditioning and the sunroof.

The ChatGPT software will enable occupants to ask the vehicle questions and receive answers. The AI capabilities will extend beyond general knowledge questions to include controlling vehicle features, such as adjusting the temperature or opening the sunroof.

From a security standpoint, Volkswagen assures potential users that ChatGPT will not have access to vehicle data. Furthermore, any questions asked and answered by the software will be immediately deleted for privacy reasons.

While the specific release date for the implementation of ChatGPT in Volkswagen’s vehicles is not yet known, the company has mentioned that it will be rolled out in certain new models starting from the second quarter of 2024. The updated Golf, Tiguan, ID.4, and ID.5 are among the models expected to feature the AI software.

This integration of artificial intelligence in Volkswagen vehicles marks a significant step forward in enhancing the driving experience and providing occupants with a more interactive and intelligent infotainment system. As AI continues to advance, the automotive industry is embracing its potential to revolutionize in-car technology and improve the overall functionality of vehicles.
