Volkswagen Introduces Advanced AI Chatbot for Enhanced In-Car Experience

German automaker Volkswagen has unveiled an innovative AI chatbot, integrated into its IDA voice assistant, to provide drivers with an enhanced in-car experience. The new chatbot, named ChatGPT, is powered by Cerence Chat Pro and can be activated by saying “Hello IDA” or by pressing a button on the steering wheel.

IDA, the voice assistant, automatically prioritizes tasks such as executing vehicle functions, searching for destinations, or adjusting the temperature. If the request cannot be answered by the Volkswagen system, it is redirected anonymously to the AI-powered ChatGPT, which responds in the familiar Volkswagen voice.

Importantly, ChatGPT does not have access to any vehicle data, and all questions and answers are immediately deleted to ensure the highest level of data protection. Volkswagen has emphasized its commitment to data privacy and security.

Volkswagen is set to become the first volume manufacturer to offer ChatGPT as a standard feature in many production vehicles, starting from the second quarter of 2024. The chatbot will be available in conjunction with the latest generation of infotainment systems in various Volkswagen models, including the ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, the all-new Tiguan, the all-new Passat, and the new Golf.

Kai Grunitz, Member of the Board of Management at Volkswagen Brand for technical Development, highlighted the seamless integration of ChatGPT and the collaboration with Cerence as a valuable addition for Volkswagen drivers, providing direct access to an AI-based research tool.

With the introduction of ChatGPT, the IDA voice assistant can now control various features such as infotainment, navigation, air conditioning, and also answer general knowledge questions. The capabilities of the AI chatbot will continuously expand, offering additional information in response to more complex queries.

Stefan Ortmanns, CEO of Cerence, commended Volkswagen for implementing an automotive-grade ChatGPT integration that prioritizes security, usability, flexibility, and customization.

By introducing this advanced AI chatbot, Volkswagen aims to enhance the in-car experience for its customers, offering them seamless control and access to information through their voice interactions with the IDA voice assistant.
