Mercedes-Benz Upgrades In-Car Voice Assistant with AI

Mercedes-Benz is enhancing its in-car voice assistant by incorporating generative AI, aiming to provide more natural interactions and personalized driving experiences. The upgraded MBUX Virtual Assistant, running on the next-generation MB.OS operating system, promises to create a more “human-like interface” with Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The AI-powered voice assistant will offer predictive behavior such as playing the morning news headlines or suggesting dialing into a meeting if the owner is running late. Although Mercedes has existing voice-command capabilities, the integration of generative AI is expected to make voice queries more natural and less prone to false positives.

Mercedes has not disclosed the specific company it is partnering with for the voice assistant’s update. The move reflects the automaker’s efforts to stay ahead of the AI trend in the tech industry. Competitors like Volkswagen, BMW, and Hyundai are also developing sophisticated in-car voice assistants using large-language models (LLMs) that power popular chatbots.

The MBUX assistant will rely on an LLM for natural dialogue and accurate answers. It will also have four “personality traits” — natural, predictive, personal, and empathetic — creating a conversational experience. The assistant’s settings, including tone and speaking style, can be customized to fit the driver’s preferences. Mercedes uses Nvidia as one of its suppliers for the water-cooled chips that power its MB.OS system.

Mercedes emphasizes that it collaborates with various technology partners for advancements in artificial intelligence and natural language processing, but refrains from disclosing the specific generative AI technology provider.

Mercedes had previously tested OpenAI’s ChatGPT for its cars but did not mention the chatbot in its recent press release. The company had shown interest in evaluating ChatGPT’s ability to help drivers get answers to complex questions while keeping their attention on the road. Meanwhile, Volkswagen announced its plan to integrate ChatGPT into its vehicles starting later this year.

Mercedes aims to introduce the initial cars with MB.OS alongside its upcoming Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA), set for release in 2025. The Concept CLA, revealed at CES this year, offers a glimpse of what these future vehicles will look like. Additionally, Mercedes plans to enhance its vehicles with more videoconferencing and streaming options, including Microsoft Teams and Sony Pictures Ridevu. The company also introduces Surround Navigation, providing situational awareness with 3D graphics on the infotainment display.
