Intel recently made a splash at CES 2024 with the announcement of its latest lineup of processors, which includes both mobile and desktop CPUs. Among these new chips is the highly anticipated Intel Core Series 1, designed specifically for thin-and-light laptops. While these processors have the potential to be some of the best in the market, Intel’s naming conventions have caused some confusion, as machines now sport both the old naming convention and the new Core Ultra rebrand.
One of the highlights of Intel’s new lineup is the Core HX series, which features five CPUs tailored for gamers and creators. The top-of-the-line chip in this series is the Intel Core i9-14900HX, boasting an impressive 24 cores and 32 threads. All the processors in this series come with Intel’s integrated UHD graphics, but they are likely to be paired with dedicated graphics cards, rendering the iGPU inconsequential. With a base TDP of 55 watts and the ability to boost up to 157 watts in turbo mode, these processors offer powerful performance. They also support up to 192GB of DDR5-5600 memory, as well as DDR4-3200.
Intel promises significant improvements with these chips, including a 17% boost in gaming performance and a 51% increase in productivity compared to previous generations. Over 60 laptops equipped with these processors are expected to hit the market in 2024, although specific models and prices have not been disclosed.
In addition to the HX chips, Intel also introduced the Core U Series 1 processors, targeting ultrathin laptops with a focus on productivity. These processors support up to 10 cores and 12 threads, along with Intel’s integrated graphics. They also offer support for up to 96GB of DDR5-5200 or LPDDR5/x-6400 memory, as well as DDR4-3200 and LPDDR4x-4267. Connectivity options include Thunderbolt 4 and Wi-Fi 7. With a base power of 15 watts, these chips can be boosted to 55 watts.
Laptops featuring the Core U Series 1 processors are expected to be available in the first quarter of 2024, with more information likely to be revealed during CES 2024.
Lastly, Intel expanded its range of desktop processors with the Raptor Lake refresh models, offering the entire 13th-gen lineup in its 14th-gen form. These CPUs are compatible with 700- and 600-series chipsets and utilize Intel’s hybrid architecture. Intel touts support for up to DDR5-5600 memory in the higher-end products.
While the complete list of models has not been disclosed, Intel did mention that 18 new CPUs will be released. This lineup includes chips such as the Core i9-14900 and the Core i7-14700, with the latter featuring four additional E-cores compared to its predecessor.
