Intel Unveils New Lineup of 14th Gen Processors, Including Budget-Friendly Options

Intel recently announced its latest lineup of processors, expanding the Raptor Lake Refresh family. Alongside the K-series processors that were launched last year, the 14th Gen lineup now includes the Core i5 14500, 14400, and Core i3 14100, as well as new low power variants of most chips.

These new processors feature the Raptor Lake architecture, which is predominantly used in the 13th and 14th Gen processors. While the architecture remains similar, the 14th Gen parts offer slightly higher clock speeds, resulting in marginal performance improvements.

One notable addition is the budget-friendly Core i5 14400F, which boasts higher clock speeds compared to its predecessor, the 13400F. The Core i5 14500 offers even better performance with an additional 200MHz across both P-cores and E-cores. On the other hand, the Core i3 14100 is faster by 200MHz but lacks E-cores.

Despite these improvements, it is unlikely that users will experience significant frame rate improvements compared to the 13th Gen processors. The slightly higher clock speeds may be desirable but may not justify the cost for some users.

Although Intel also announced the Core i7 14700K, which brings improvements in both clock speeds and core count, the cheaper 14th Gen processors do not see an increase in core count. In fact, these processors are still based on the Alder Lake dies, albeit with some modifications. The Raptor Lake architecture originally offered increased L2 cache per core, but the cheaper 14th Gen processors maintain the same core and cache count as Alder Lake dies.

In addition to the desktop processors, Intel has also unveiled the 14th Gen HX-series mobile chips. These mobile processors offer slightly higher clock speeds compared to their 13th Gen counterparts, with the Core i9 14900HX delivering impressive performance. However, it appears that Intel prioritized performance for the top HX chip and didn’t make significant changes further down the stack.

Intel has also introduced its Application Optimizer software for the 14th Gen HX-series processors, which helps enhance performance in supported games. While the software’s current list of supported titles is limited, Intel claims that it continues to expand.

Overall, Intel’s latest announcements offer incremental improvements in clock speeds and performance across its 14th Gen lineup. However, it remains to be seen whether these improvements will be compelling enough for users to upgrade from the previous generation.
