Intel Debuts New Raptor Lake Refresh Chips to Compete with AMD Ryzen

Intel has revealed its latest line of Raptor Lake Refresh chips, offering improved performance and a range of options for consumers. The new processors, available in both 65W and 35W models, are designed to compete with AMD’s Ryzen 7000 series. With up to 37% more multi-threaded performance compared to the previous generation, Intel’s higher-end Raptor Lake models are set to impress.

At the top of the lineup is the flagship Core i9-14900, a 24-core 32-thread chip priced at $549. For those looking for lower power options, the Core i9-14900T is available in the 35W lineup. The range extends to the budget-friendly Intel Processor 300, a dual-core quad-thread chip priced at $82.

Like the K-Series models before them, the Raptor Lake Refresh chips are built on Intel’s ‘Intel 7’ process node. While they may not offer groundbreaking improvements compared to previous generations, Intel has optimized the chips to make them more appealing to consumers.

The new Raptor Lake chips are compatible with Intel’s 600- and 700-series motherboards, providing plenty of options for builders. Features include support for up to 192GB of DDR5-5600/DDR4-3200 memory and PCIe 5.0/4.0 lane allocations. Intel has also included USB 3.2 with transfer rates of up to 20 Gbps.

To cater to different budgets, Intel offers more affordable B- and H-series motherboards for its lower-power chips. The company also provides options for graphics-less models to save costs.

While the Core i7-14700 stands out with additional cores compared to its predecessor, the gains across the product stack are generally modest. The mid-range Core i5 processors are popular among gamers, but the Core i5-14400 offers only minor improvements over the previous generation.

Intel has shared its own benchmarks, which show incremental improvements over the prior generation and victories in productivity workloads against AMD’s Ryzen 9 7900. However, independent testing will be necessary to confirm these claims.

The new Raptor Lake Refresh processors are available now at major retailers worldwide. Intel has also released specific SKUs tailored for the Chinese market.
