California officials are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) in a bid to combat the notorious traffic congestion in Los Angeles. To this end, several state agencies have issued a Request for Innovative Ideas (RFI2) to explore generative AI solutions that can process diverse data and offer valuable traffic mobility insights.
Generative AI refers to AI models that can produce high-quality content, such as text and images, based on the data they have been trained on. Tech giants like Google are already utilizing AI to mitigate traffic congestion through initiatives like “Project Green Light,” which combines AI data with Google Maps driving trends to optimize traffic flow and reduce emissions.
This push for AI integration is part of an executive order signed by Governor Gavin Newsom last year, which mandates state agencies to assess the development, use, and risks of AI. The aim is to establish a deliberate and responsible framework for the deployment of AI throughout California.
During a press conference in May 2023, Governor Newsom acknowledged California’s prominence in the AI sector but emphasized the need for careful consideration. He stated, “I’m deeply mindful of that but I also feel a deep sense of accountability in respectfully answering the question after I have a deeper understanding of the world we are living in … I recognize how quickly this is moving, but with humility, I submit that I want to be careful in this space.”
Tech companies are invited to submit their proposals on AI-based traffic congestion relief until January 25. By harnessing the power of AI, California aims to find innovative solutions that will alleviate traffic congestion and enhance transportation efficiency in the region.
