Ambarella Expands CV3-AD Automotive AI Domain Controller Family for Autonomous Driving

Ambarella, a leading semiconductor technology company specializing in edge AI, has announced the launch of two new systems-on-chip (SoCs) as part of its CV3-AD automotive AI domain controller family. These new additions, the CV3-AD635 and CV3-AD655, are designed to enhance autonomous driving (AD) and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) across various vehicle types.

The CV3-AD635 is optimized for mainstream L2+ features such as highway autopilot and automated parking, meeting industry standards like GSR2 and NCAP. On the other hand, the CV3-AD655 caters to advanced L2+ applications, including urban autopilot, and is compatible with a wide range of additional cameras, radars, and sensors. These new additions join Ambarella’s existing products, the CV3-AD685 and CV72AQ, to provide a comprehensive range of AD and ADAS solutions to meet the needs of different vehicle models.

Powering these SoCs is Ambarella’s CVflow® 3.0 AI accelerator, delivering high AI processing performance and power efficiency. This ensures the development of vehicles with reliable AD and ADAS capabilities while minimizing thermal-management costs. The lower power consumption also enables the use of smaller, lighter, and more affordable electric vehicle batteries or extends the range of the vehicle using the same battery size.

Manufactured using Samsung’s advanced 5nm automotive process technology, the CV3-AD SoCs are designed to scale in performance to meet various automotive requirements. For example, the CV3-AD655 offers double the neural network processing performance of the CV3-AD635, while the CV3-AD685 provides six times the performance. These SoCs are also designed to meet ASIL-B safety standards at the chip level, with an ASIL-D safety island included.

Ambarella’s CV3-AD family features a full software stack for autonomous and semi-autonomous driving, allowing for easy portability and a shared architecture with an SDK and tools. Furthermore, the SoCs are equipped with an on-chip image signal processor for enhanced imaging in challenging lighting conditions and efficient H.264 video encoding for high-resolution video recording and streaming.

Engineering samples of the CV3-AD635 and CV3-AD655 are expected to be available in Q1 2024. Ambarella is also showcasing the capabilities of the CV3-AD family through fully autonomous test drives in its research and development vehicles at CES.

This expansion of Ambarella’s CV3-AD family comes after the company forged a strategic partnership with Continental, with a focus on delivering optimized full-stack software solutions for automated vehicles ranging from Level 2+ to Level 4. The first joint series production resulting from this partnership is scheduled for 2027.
