Google’s AI and quantum subsidiary Sandbox AQ acquires Vancouver-based quantum chemistry startup

Sandbox AQ, the AI and quantum firm spun out of Google parent company Alphabet, has made its second acquisition, this time acquiring Vancouver-based quantum and computational chemistry startup, Good Chemistry. The financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed.

Good Chemistry, founded in 2021 as a spin-off of quantum computing company 1QBit, offers cloud-based tools that accelerate material design. Its platform allows developers to build chemical simulation apps and workflows using algorithms in quantum chemistry, machine learning, and quantum computing.

The acquisition of Good Chemistry will expand Sandbox AQ’s global presence and bring in “proven technologies,” including simulation technologies, to its portfolio. Additionally, major customers, such as Dow Chemical, will be added to Sandbox AQ’s customer base. All of Good Chemistry’s backers, including Green Sands Equity and Accenture Ventures, have joined Sandbox AQ’s investor base as part of the deal.

By combining the capabilities of both companies, Sandbox AQ aims to create an advanced and scalable computing platform for highly accurate chemical simulation. This will enable the company to offer impactful use cases, such as new drug and material synthesis, to its customers.

Sandbox AQ sees simulation as increasingly important in its work across various sectors, including drug discovery, material design, agriculture, defense, energy, medical, and manufacturing. With the acquisition, Sandbox AQ gains 25 computational and quantum chemists, AI and software engineers, and quantum computing scientists with expertise in simulation technology.

Good Chemistry’s software, including Qemist Cloud and Tangelo, will be integrated into Sandbox AQ’s enterprise software portfolio. Qemist enables users to take advantage of quantum chemistry through simulation, while Tangelo allows them to conduct chemistry experiments across different quantum cloud providers and hardware devices.

This acquisition follows Sandbox AQ’s previous acquisition of enterprise-focused software-as-a-service cybersecurity and encryption startup, Cryptosense, earlier in 2022.
