Mindful AI Labs Co-Founder Arrested for Son’s Murder, Attempts to Flee to Karnataka

A shocking incident unfolded as a 39-year-old woman, a co-founder of an artificial intelligence start-up, was apprehended for the murder of her 4-year-old son in Goa. What makes this case even more disturbing is that the accused woman attempted to escape to Karnataka while carrying her deceased child’s body. The arrest took place in Karnataka’s Chitradurga on Monday, where the woman was found traveling in a cab with the lifeless body of her son stuffed in a bag.

The alleged culprit, identified as Suchana Seth, is known for her involvement in Mindful AI Labs. It is reported that she committed the murder in a Candolim apartment in Goa. The chain of events unfolded when Seth checked into the Sol Banyan Grande Hotel on Saturday and departed on Monday morning. At the hotel, she requested the staff to arrange a cab for her journey to Bengaluru, Karnataka.

Peculiarly, the hotel staff suggested she consider taking a flight instead of traveling by cab. However, Seth persisted in her decision to opt for a cab. Perturbed by the absence of her child, the hotel staff discovered bloodstains in Seth’s room, leading them to grow suspicious. Consequently, they alerted the authorities, who promptly contacted the cab driver and asked him to hand the phone to Seth.

During the phone conversation, the police questioned Seth about her son’s whereabouts. She claimed he had gone out with friends and provided the police with an address, which later turned out to be false. Alarmed by these developments, the hotel staff found themselves compelled to collaborate with law enforcement. As a result, the police instructed the cab driver to bring Seth to the nearest police station.

To avoid arousing suspicion, the police and the cab driver conversed in Konkani, a language unfamiliar to Seth. Ultimately, they arrived at Chitradurga Police Station, where the woman was arrested, and her son’s lifeless body was discovered inside the bag. As of now, the motive behind the murder remains unclear. Authorities have detained Seth and initiated an investigation into the distressing incident.

Although Seth was recognized as one of the “100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics for 2021” and held a fellowship at Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center, this incident has sent shockwaves through the AI community. With over a decade of experience mentoring data science teams and working on machine learning solutions, it is indeed a tragic turn of events for someone so accomplished in the field.
