Mitsubishi Electric and TomTom Collaborate to Advance Automated Driving

Mitsubishi Electric and TomTom have joined forces to drive innovation in the field of automated driving. Building on their respective expertise in high-precision mapping and GPS-based vehicle positioning, the companies aim to develop hardware solutions that deliver the accurate navigation data necessary for next-generation vehicles.

By combining TomTom’s High Definition (HD) Map with Mitsubishi Electric’s High-Definition Locator, the integrated system provides unmatched accuracy and reliability for automated driving applications. The High-Definition Locator utilizes quasi-zenith satellites (QZSS) to ensure precise positioning at all times, while TomTom’s HD Map offers detailed road data, including lane centerlines, traffic signs, and other objects.

The collaboration between these two industry leaders is set to accelerate the advancement of autonomous driving technology. TomTom’s HD Maps are designed specifically for self-driving vehicles, providing them with the information they need to plan routes and make adjustments in real-time. With their multi-sourcing strategy that incorporates data from GPS probes, cameras, and vehicle sensors, TomTom’s HD Maps offer a comprehensive view of the road ahead.

Michael Horani, Director of Advanced Development at Mitsubishi Electric Automotive America, Inc., expressed excitement about working with TomTom, a renowned provider of mapping data. He believes that this collaboration will lead to significant improvements in the safety and performance of autonomous vehicles.

Paul Hesen, VP Product Management at TomTom, highlighted the importance of digital maps in the context of self-driving cars. He emphasized that TomTom’s HD Maps go beyond basic navigation and are specifically tailored to the needs of automated driving. The highly detailed and accurate maps enable self-driving vehicles to navigate complex routes, change lanes, take exits, and merge into traffic seamlessly.

As the automotive industry moves towards higher levels of autonomous driving, partnerships like the one between Mitsubishi Electric and TomTom will play a crucial role in shaping the future of mobility. By combining their expertise and resources, these companies are driving the innovation necessary for safe and reliable automated driving systems.
