Nvidia has surprised the tech community by releasing its latest Super graphics cards at more accessible price points. The most notable of these price drops is seen in the RTX 4080 Super, the successor to the RTX 4080. While the RTX 4080 originally debuted at $1,200, the Super version will hit the market at just $1,000. This unexpected change in pricing by Nvidia, a company often associated with high GPU prices, is a welcome shift for consumers.
Despite the price reduction, the RTX 4080 Super remains quite similar to its predecessor. It utilizes the same AD103 GPU, offering a mere 5% increase in performance with its full die and 10,240 CUDA cores. The Super version also retains the 16GB of GDDR6X memory and 320-watt power draw of the original model.
The launch of the RTX 4080 Super is not just a refresh; it represents a true price cut. The original RTX 4080 was criticized as being overpriced upon its release, but the Super variant now presents a more competitive option. With DLSS 3.5 technology and improved ray tracing performance, the RTX 4080 Super is poised to rival AMD’s RX 7900 XTX.
In addition to the RTX 4080 Super, Nvidia is also unveiling two other Super GPUs. The RTX 4070 Ti Super will replace the RTX 4070 Ti and boasts an upgraded AD103 GPU with 8,448 CUDA cores. This GPU is expected to offer a 10% average performance improvement over its predecessor, with some games potentially seeing a 15% boost. The RTX 4070 Ti Super also features 16GB of GDDR6X memory, similar to the RTX 4080.
Meanwhile, the most exciting GPU announcement is the RTX 4070 Super. This graphics card, priced at $600, delivers a 20% increase in core count compared to the base RTX 4070. According to Nvidia, the RTX 4070 Super is 15% faster on average compared to its non-Super counterpart. Impressively, it even outperforms the RTX 3090, a GPU previously priced at $1,500.
Nvidia plans to roll out these new Super GPUs gradually, with the RTX 4070 releasing first on January 17, followed by the RTX 4070 Ti Super on January 24, and finally the RTX 4080 Super on January 31. While the RTX 4070 Super will coexist with the standard RTX 4070, Nvidia has officially reduced the price of the latter to $550. The company also promises to offer Founder’s Edition designs for the RTX 4070 Super and RTX 4080 Super, while all three models will be available at the listed prices.
