AMD has just unveiled its latest lineup of desktop APUs at CES 2024, introducing the Ryzen 8000G series. These processors come with built-in graphics capabilities that AMD claims can provide impressive performance for AAA gaming titles, eliminating the need for a separate graphics card. The Ryzen 8000G series includes three desktop CPUs: the Ryzen 7 8700G, Ryzen 5 8600G, and Ryzen 5 8500G. Additionally, there is an entry-level model exclusively available in pre-built desktops. All four chips are equipped with AMD’s Radeon 700M graphics and are designed to compete against some of the popular discrete graphics cards.
The top processor in the lineup, the Ryzen 7 8700G, offers an impressive 8 cores and 16 threads, with a base clock frequency of 4.2GHz and a maximum boost frequency of 5.1GHz. It features 24MB of cache and operates at a TDP of 65W. The other CPUs in the series also offer excellent performance with varying core counts and clock speeds.
AMD specifically focused on gaming performance during the announcement. According to AMD’s benchmarks, the Ryzen 7 8700G can deliver over 60 frames per second (fps) in demanding games like Far Cry 6, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and GTA 5 at 1080p resolution. Esports titles achieved even higher frame rates, with 236 fps in League of Legends and 581 fps in World of Tanks Encore.
Comparisons were made against Intel’s Core i7-14700K and an Intel Core i5-13400F paired with an Nvidia GTX 1650 graphics card. The Ryzen 5 8600G and Ryzen 7 8700G outperformed the Intel CPUs in most games, showcasing the capabilities of the Ryzen 8000G series.
