Microsoft Copilot Falls Short of Impacting OpenAI’s ChatGPT

According to recent data from app store intelligence provider Appfigures, Microsoft Copilot, the AI chatbot developed with OpenAI technologies, has not made a significant impact on OpenAI’s own chatbot, ChatGPT. Despite offering free access to OpenAI’s newer GPT-4 technology, Copilot’s launch went largely unnoticed due to a lack of promotion.

Initially released on Google Play without any marketing efforts, the app had low visibility, leading to modest downloads. Although it later became available on the App Store, Microsoft failed to utilize Apple’s Search Ads to attract iOS users. As a result, Copilot has only amassed 2.1 million installs across iOS and Android as of January 5th.

Contrary to expectations, ChatGPT’s downloads had already slowed down in December before Copilot was released. During the same period that Copilot accumulated its 2.1 million installs, ChatGPT managed to add an additional 4.2 million downloads.

Experts suggest several reasons why Copilot has failed to outshine ChatGPT. First, ChatGPT already has a dedicated user base that may be hesitant to switch to a new platform. Second, Copilot’s holiday launch without sufficient promotion resulted in many potential users being unaware of its existence. Additionally, some users may find the integration of Bing, Microsoft’s search engine, in Copilot less appealing.

The Copilot for Android app offers users a standalone experience, providing access to Microsoft’s AI-powered Copilot without the need for the Bing mobile app. It offers chatbot capabilities, image generation through DALL-E 3, and the ability to draft text for emails and documents.

In another deployment of Copilot, Microsoft announced the addition of a button to the Windows keyboard that activates the AI tool. This marks Microsoft’s first keyboard layout change in nearly 30 years and aligns with the company’s goal of seamlessly integrating AI into Windows.
