Microsoft Copilot’s Impact on OpenAI’s ChatGPT Unclear as App Store Data Shows Limited User Engagement

A recent analysis of app store data suggests that Microsoft’s AI chatbot, Copilot, has not significantly affected the user base of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Despite offering free access to OpenAI’s GPT-4 technology, Copilot’s launch has not appeared to impact the installations or revenue of ChatGPT. However, this may be attributed to the lack of promotion for Copilot.

According to app store intelligence provider Appfigures, Copilot’s launch went largely unnoticed by potential users. The app initially failed to gain traction on the Google Play Store as there was no promotion during its release. Although it later became available on the App Store, Microsoft did not utilize Apple’s Search Ads to generate attention from iOS users. Leveraging this ad opportunity could have potentially boosted Copilot’s visibility.

Since its release, Copilot has garnered 2.1 million downloads across iOS and Android. However, daily downloads have shown a downward trend with a peak of 413,000 downloads. Notably, Copilot’s downloads are relatively evenly split between Google Play and the App Store, standing at 59% and 41%, respectively.

Despite a slight decline in ChatGPT’s downloads in December, which predates Copilot’s release, it has still gained an additional 4.2 million downloads during Copilot’s installation period. Appfigures suggests that Copilot’s presence has not impacted ChatGPT’s installs or revenue, the latter of which continues to rise. ChatGPT’s mobile apps have generated nearly $30 million in revenue as of its first anniversary in November.

ChatGPT’s launch was a notable success, reaching over 500,000 downloads in its first six days. Although Copilot has not achieved the same level of attention, possible factors include the existing dedicated user base of ChatGPT and the lack of promotion during the holiday launch. Some users may also have been deterred by the heavy integration with Microsoft’s search engine, Bing.

Despite Copilot’s release, ChatGPT remains the leading AI chatbot. Meanwhile, Microsoft continues to explore other applications for its AI technology, such as introducing a Copilot button on PCs.
