AMD has recently announced the release of the highly anticipated RX 7600 XT graphics card at CES 2024. Following the success of the original RX 7600, fans have been eagerly awaiting its successor. However, with tough competition in the $300 range graphics card market, the question remains whether the RX 7600 XT delivers enough to stand out.
Although the RX 7600 and the XT model are built on the same GPU architecture and boast the same number of cores, the XT version offers a 10% boost in clock speed and a higher power draw of up to 190 watts. The most notable difference between the two models is the inclusion of 16GB of GDDR6 memory. AMD seems to have taken a page from Nvidia’s playbook by increasing the memory capacity without making significant changes to other specifications.
Unfortunately, the decision to use a 128-bit bus for the memory may pose a potential bottleneck for the RX 7600 XT’s performance. This limitation could result in bandwidth constraints, similar to what we saw with the RTX 4060 Ti. While higher memory capacity is certainly desirable, the thin bus width might hinder the card’s overall performance.
AMD claims that the RX 7600 XT offers improved performance compared to the base model. The company’s data suggests a 40% improvement at 1080p and a 45% improvement at 1440p in Forza Horizon 5, while other titles show more marginal gains, such as a 17% jump in Starfield and The Last of Us Part I. However, it is important to note that all of these games were tested with FidelityFX Super Resolution 2, which may have influenced the results.
The RX 7600 XT is priced at $330, putting it $30 above Nvidia’s RTX 4060 and $60 more than the RX 7600. While the RX 7600 offers competitive performance at a lower price point, it remains to be seen if the XT variant justifies the premium price tag.
The RX 7600 XT will be available from board partners starting January 24, 2024. As with any new graphics card release, performance comparisons across a variety of games will be crucial in determining whether the upgrade is truly worthwhile. Only time will tell if the increased VRAM capacity of the RX 7600 XT translates into significant performance gains in real-world scenarios.
