Nvidia’s Upcoming GeForce RTX 40 Super GPUs: Leaked Prices Suggest Notable Value Gains

According to recent leaks by @Zed__Wang, who has a reliable track record in predicting Nvidia GPU specifications, the prices for Nvidia’s upcoming GeForce RTX 40 Super GPUs have been revealed. These leaks indicate that not all three models in the RTX 40 Super series will have attractive price tags, especially the RTX 4080 Super, which is rumored to launch at $999.

The Super branding, previously used to refresh the Turing GPU series in 2019, is being revived for the RTX 40 Super series. Historically, the Super designation has meant offering better price points and performance levels compared to the original lineup. The leaked hardware specifications suggest that the performance aspect of the equation is being addressed in the RTX 40 series.

However, it’s important to approach these leaks with caution as they are still rumors. Fortunately, Nvidia’s CES 2024 presentation is scheduled for tomorrow, January 8, where the RTX 40 Super series is expected to be officially unveiled.

Interestingly, the leaked prices for the RTX 40 Super GPUs show limited changes compared to the original RTX 40 series cards. The RTX 4070 Super and the RTX 4070 Ti Super are expected to retain their prices at $599 and $799 respectively. On the other hand, the RTX 4080 Super sees a price drop of $200, bringing it down to $999.

These prices highlight the substantial upgrades being offered. For example, the RTX 4070 Super boasts a 21% increase in CUDA cores, which should theoretically result in a 21% improvement in value (performance per dollar). The RTX 4070 Ti Super, with its 10% increase in CUDA cores and additional 4GB of VRAM, offers a unique value proposition that is harder to quantify.

Although the RTX 4080 Super only has a 5% increase in CUDA cores, the $200 discount makes it an appealing option. However, it’s worth noting that the original RTX 4080 had a higher MSRP than AMD’s flagship Radeon RX 7900 XTX. With the drop in retail prices for both GPUs, slotting the RTX 4080 Super at $999 doesn’t seem groundbreaking on paper.

In summary, while the RTX 40 Super lineup showcases exciting improvements, particularly in the cheaper models, it remains to be seen how these GPUs will perform in real-world scenarios. AMD may need to reassess the pricing of their competing GPUs to stay competitive in the market.
