Deepfakes and the Rise of FACStamps: A Solution to Misinformation

A future where deepfakes threaten the integrity of democracy may seem like a distant possibility. FACStamps are small icons or audio notices that indicate that the content has been authenticated and is not a deepfake. The stamp is automatically inserted into visual or audio content at the time of capture, ensuring that it was not generated by AI. To retain the FACStamp after editing, the content must be connected to the non-profit FAC Verification Center, which verifies the legitimacy of the edits made.

Initially used by journalists, FACStamps quickly spread to other domains. Internet retailers embraced FACStamps for product videos and images, providing reassurance to customers. Individuals began using FACStamps to sell goods online, offering proof that the images were not manipulated by AI. In social media, FACStamps became a symbol of authenticity, verifying that images and videos were genuine.

Even the AI industry supports FACStamps, as excessive exposure to AI-generated data can lead to “model collapse” during training runs. Dating app profiles, video conference calls, and influencer content increasingly rely on FACStamps to maintain credibility and build trust.

In the battle against misinformation and deepfakes, the rise of FACStamps represents a significant step forward. By embracing authentication measures, individuals, businesses, and media organizations can ensure that content remains trustworthy and reliable, safeguarding the integrity of information in our increasingly digital world.
