Wizards of the Coast Faces Backlash over Allegations of AI-Generated Cards for Magic: The Gathering

After previous accusations of using AI-generated images in Dungeons and Dragons books, Wizards of the Coast is once again under scrutiny. This time, people are convinced that the company utilized artificial intelligence to create cards for Magic: The Gathering. The controversy started when the official Magic: The Gathering Twitter account shared a photo captioned: “It’s positively shocking how good these lands look in retro frame. #MTGRavnica.” However, shortly after the tweet, suspicions arose that the company had relied on AI once again to promote their products.

Several Twitter users expressed doubt, with one suggesting that “This looks very AI generated — with some human photoshopping over the top.” Similarly, many other users shared similar sentiments in their replies. In response to the accusations, Magic: The Gathering released a statement saying, “We understand confusion by fans given the style being different than card art, but we stand by our previous statement. This art was created by humans and not AI.”

Wizards of the Coast has been working diligently to regain fans’ trust due to previous incidents involving AI usage. Last year, it was discovered that the company had used AI for a sourcebook called Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants. Following this revelation, Wizards of the Coast acknowledged the issue and announced revisions to their processes and artist guidelines, explicitly prohibiting the use of AI in the development of Dungeons and Dragons products.

More recently, the company faced another false accusation from a YouTuber claiming AI usage in another book. Although the allegations were proven untrue, the damage to the company’s reputation had already been done, stemming from previous instances of utilizing AI.

Wizards of the Coast has reiterated their commitment to avoiding AI involvement in their creative process. They have made it clear that artists, writers, and creatives contributing to the Magic TCG must refrain from using AI generative tools. In an effort to pivot the conversation, the company also announced a new collaboration with the Fallout series.
