TDK Ventures Invests in Semiconductor Innovator to Address Growing Demands for Computing Power

TDK Ventures, a subsidiary of TDK Corp., has recently announced its investment in Singaporean semiconductor innovator, Silicon Box. The investment aims to support Silicon Box’s revolutionary chiplet packaging design and fabrication capabilities, which promise improved performance and scalability for the semiconductor industry.

The semiconductor industry is facing a significant challenge as energy efficiency and performance struggle to keep up with the increasing demands for computing power, especially with the rapid growth of machine learning, big data, and artificial intelligence. However, current semiconductor chips are reaching a scalability limit due to conventional packaging approaches that result in high energy costs associated with data transfer between chips. Additionally, the development and manufacturing costs for chip designers have become prohibitively expensive, limiting innovation to only the most well-funded players.

“We are thrilled to join forces with Silicon Box,” said Nicolas Sauvage, President of TDK Ventures. “Their remarkable chiplet design has gained recognition in the industry, and with their advanced facility spanning 750,000 square feet, they are well-equipped for large-scale production. We are dedicated to supporting their success and making a positive impact on the world.”

Silicon Box was founded by industry leaders Dr. Sehat Sutardja and Weili Dai, who previously founded Marvell, along with Dr. Byung Joon (BJ) Han, former CEO of STATS ChipPAC. Together, Sutardja, Dai, and Han hold over 800 US patents, demonstrating their expertise in semiconductor design and packaging technologies.

Through this partnership, TDK Ventures intends to accelerate the introduction of state-of-the-art semiconductor packaging innovations to the market. By leveraging Silicon Box’s cutting-edge chiplet packaging technology, the objective is to overcome the limitations of current packaging methods and provide the industry with solutions that address both performance and scalability concerns.

The investment by TDK Ventures further highlights the growing importance of semiconductor technology and its role in shaping the future of computing power. With their combined expertise, TDK Ventures and Silicon Box are well-positioned to drive significant advancements in the semiconductor industry, paving the way for improved energy efficiency and performance in the face of expanding demands.
