Taiwan’s Quantum Leap: On the Path to Quantum Supremacy

Taiwan is poised to revolutionize the world of computing with its ambitious plan to develop its first quantum computer by 2027. Spearheaded by the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) and supported by an impressive NT$8 billion investment, Taiwan’s quantum technology blueprint is paving the way for a new era of computational power.

In a collaborative effort, the NSTC is partnering with the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Academia Sinica, and other research entities to accelerate the development of quantum computing capabilities. Additionally, Taiwan is forging international partnerships, teaming up with Finnish quantum computing hardware company, IQM, and leveraging the quantum cloud computation services offered by tech giants like IBM and Amazon. This global cooperation highlights the significance of quantum computing on a global scale.

Quantum computing holds immense potential, as demonstrated by Google’s Sycamore processor, which completed a task in seconds that would take a classical supercomputer decades. However, the field of quantum computing also presents unique challenges. High error rates hinder progress, necessitating six more years of rigorous research and development to overcome this obstacle.

One of the looming concerns in the realm of quantum technology is its potential to break digital security codes, also known as “Q Day.” To tackle this issue, researchers are exploring strategies such as quantum cryptography. Although it poses a significant threat, it also drives innovation in the field.

While Taiwan is relatively new to quantum chip development and is working to improve mass production yields, it is simultaneously establishing a comprehensive supply chain for quantum computers. Academia Sinica is set to provide 5-qubit chips for trials at research facilities. Taiwan’s ambitious endeavor not only secures its position in critical technologies but also exemplifies its commitment to leading the global technological revolution.

With its sights set on quantum supremacy, Taiwan is taking quantum leaps towards an exciting future where quantum computing can unlock unparalleled computational power.
