The gaming industry has been abuzz with excitement as MSI recently unveiled its upcoming handheld gaming device, the Claw. This announcement raised eyebrows, considering the fierce competition in the market from brands like Valve, Lenovo, and Asus, all boasting AMD-powered systems. However, MSI’s decision to equip the Claw with an Intel Meteor Lake CPU has taken everyone by surprise and marks a significant win for Intel in this category.
Thanks to a Geekbench run that has recently surfaced on Twitter, the specifications of the MSI Claw have been confirmed. The CPU, identified as the Intel Core Ultra 155H, is the third chip in the stack, falling behind the 165H and the yet-to-be-launched 185H. With 16 cores and 22 threads, including six hyper-threaded performance cores, eight efficiency cores, and two low-power cores, this device promises a unique blend of power and efficiency, unlike anything seen in portable systems before.
One of the most noteworthy features of the MSI Claw is its integration of Intel’s significantly improved graphics. Meteor Lake boasts a 2x improvement over its predecessors, making it a game-changer for Intel. However, initial gaming benchmarks for the Core Ultra 165H showed only average performance in synthetic tests. But Intel has a trick up its sleeve with the Xe-LPG GPU, which supports XeSS upscaling. Therefore, it will be fascinating to discover the capabilities of the 155H in a handheld form factor.
In addition to the impressive CPU and graphics, the Geekbench listing also reveals that the MSI Claw will come with 32GB of LPDDR5X memory, twice the amount compared to its competitors. Combined with the high thread count CPU, this powerful combination positions the Claw as a force to be reckoned with. For context, popular handheld gaming devices like the Steam Deck feature CPUs with fewer cores and threads, giving the Claw a distinct advantage.
Interestingly, Intel’s involvement with the MSI Claw was hinted at in a teaser announcement on Twitter, where they replied with a “stroking chin” emoji.
