A cutting-edge technology has been developed to identify poppy-containing poppies using artificial intelligence (AI). The National Institute of Biological Resources announced on the 23rd that they have developed a DNA classification technology using AI to identify the species of poppies. Poppies have over 110 species worldwide, and in Korea, three species containing opiates, the Papaver bracteatum, Papaver setigerum, and Papaver somniferum, are prohibited from cultivation. Due to their similarities in appearance to non-opiate species, distinguishing these prohibited species with the naked eye can be challenging.

Researchers have been working on identifying poppies containing opiates, but a comprehensive discrimination technique has not yet been developed. The Biological Resources Institute, along with Professor Kim Chang-bae of Sangmyung University, utilized the DNA sequences of poppies to classify the three species with opiate components in the first step and develop an analytical method to distinguish a specific species in the second step. The accuracy of the first classification was 88.9%, while the accuracy of the second discrimination was 100%. It is anticipated that this technology, when applied to forensic techniques, will aid in the investigation of illegal poppy cultivation.

Jeong Gyeong-cheol, the head of the Biological Resources Utilization Division at the National Institute of Biological Resources, described the newly developed poppy species identification technology as a byproduct of training specialized personnel in biological information big data analysis. He stated, “In the future, we will actively cultivate specialized individuals in the field of biotechnology to analyze various biological information using AI.”
