Globally, structured databases and data management workloads continue to receive the lion’s share of enterprise IT infrastructure spending, according to the latest semiannual report from the International Data Corporation (IDC). In the second half of last year, organizations allocated $7.2 billion to support these workloads, representing 7.8% of their total IT infrastructure expenditure.
Despite being a significant portion of the budget, data workloads saw a decrease in spending compared to the same period in the previous year. Specifically, expenditures on structured databases and data management dropped by 1.3%.

Annual spending on industry-specific business applications workloads saw the fastest growth, increasing by 36.6% in the second half of last year. During the same period, artificial intelligence lifecycle management surged by 26.6%, accounting for 7.2% of enterprise infrastructure spending – the second-largest slice amounting to $6.6 billion.
After two weak periods, spending on client devices saw a robust recovery with a 22.6% annual increase in the second half of 2023. Development tools and applications, text and media analytics solutions, as well as business intelligence and data analytics workloads also ended the period with double-digit growth rates ranging from 15% to 17%.
Geographically, priorities differ in terms of which workloads enterprises emphasize when allocating their IT infrastructure budgets. In North and South America, spending on AI lifecycle management workloads took the lead, with companies investing $3.1 billion in the support of such tasks in the latter half of last year. Conversely, in regions including Asia-Pacific (excluding Japan and China), China, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, structured databases and data management workloads were primary, with organizations in these markets spending $1.1 billion, $2.3 billion, and $0.99 billion, respectively.
